Little plum lent me a book ''Dewey'' about the library cat from Spencer Public Library in Iowa, USA. Its the story about a ginger cat that was found in the bookdrop of the library and which was named Dewey Readmore Books. Did a search and found that the library has now decided on a no-more-pets rule for reasons that people are allergic to cats and that is preventing tax-payers from using a public place!
The part about having to decide to put Dewey down due to tumour was quite sad. My two cats are now approaching 12 years old and are already slowing down. I find myself pampering Horus more and more because i know he's approaching the end soon. But where the end is, i don't know and there's no point to make myself sad by looking out for it. When it comes, it comes. I only know that at the end, i want to have them both cremated so they can still be with me.
But reading about the library banning pets and the report about someone saying she was shut out of the library her entire school career because of Dewey, and fighting not to have any more pets, was an eye-opener. Are people so one-sided? True, the public library is funded by tax-payers, but surely there are also other forms of allergies? I read of people who cannot be in contact with chemicals and who live in their own bubble house. Would their family members demand equal opportunity for them? Or if they pay tax on their goods and services, don't they have equal rights to access public areas too? How about those allergic to perfumes or to the chemicals in fragrances? Libraries are now mostly carpetted and air-conditioned; doesn't this prevent such people from access? Then how about seeing-eye dogs? If you're allergic to pet dander, don't these dogs shed too?
I don't live in the town. And i believe that if i want to be heard i need to participate and vote for what i believe in. So since i'm not going to migrate to Spencer, i'll just rant here... heehee! But really, its not fair to pet lovers. :(

What a cute name. Based on the cataloguing system no doubt.
Some people love pets, others don't. Guess we have to respect that too. And some people can't help but not be close to them, i.e. allergies. I'm grateful I'm not one of them.
