Get it right -- no such thing as off-in-lieu!

Had a heated exchange of opinions with C while on the way to HQ on Monday afternoon. I asked him on the coy's policies on signing on cleaners on 5-day week, and he said i shouldn't have done that. In the end, while going up the office carpark ramp, he asked me if he would have to pay cleaners for the 4-month maternity leave? Of course not! This is only for management staff, ok!

So once we reached HQ, we both headed straight for the HR manager, CJ. He tried to fudge a bit and initially said we should just let them sign a 5.5 contract and take it as giving them extra off. I asked him what would happen if they were to fall at home on a Saturday? How would the medical cover them? I'm not going to tear up leave forms every Monday once they come back safely on Monday mornings! Hmmm... ya, you got a point. Better sign 5-day week. kns...

Then i went in for the first thrust. This Friday is a PH. So those on 5-day week would not be working on Sat. Would payroll then deduct their salary?
Wait wait, call F in. F!!!
We don't pay 5-day work week, ok? Put 5.5!
But the medical cannot cover like this. No choice got to put 5-day, so Sat is off.
Is it? *angry* ok la, ok la. Then 5-day la.
Then next Sat how? Its PH you know.
PH then PH la! Off on the PH lor!
The link you sent me this morning? If PH falls on your off, the employee is entitled to a day's salary or off-in-lieu. So we give them off or pay them one day's salary?
Get this right *finger pointing at me* -- our company doesn't practice encashment of leave. What off-in-lieu they want? Already off on Sat what! Anyway they're not so clever one la. Don't go and bother about them!
Err... cannot say that. This particular cleaner is very smart and knows her rights.
Aiya, just tell her we already give her 5-day week, so actually she owes the company 2 working days. What extra off she wants! Haiya, if she wants then i will only add it to the leave entitlement. She can only take it after she is confirmed. But remember this, the company will NOT pay one day's salary.
Add to the leave entitlement? For now its easy to remember cos all same commencement. Next time who will remember the additional days? Payroll? (that's F's dept) HR? Or site? This year has a lot of such you know!
Of course its you la! Leave form you fill in for her la!

After that, F stormed off. Think the boss' daughter wasn't very happy with me especially after i had indicated that i wanted to leave. C & i stayed back to chat with CJ, and when we grumbled about it and C asked about the maternity leave rights, CJ corrected him and told him all are entitled regardless of management or cleaners. C then said he wants to fight etc, and in the end, we harped on working hours. CJ then played his trump card -- our letter of appointment only indicates our working hours. But we are expected to stay back until the job is completed.

Bloody hell!!! So i have to sell my life to the company? For what!!! I get the same salary as before, i get to do 6 people's worth of work at my site, i got to be admin for the other south contract, and i get 60-hour work week!

Is it worth it? big seed told me of a possible piece of good news, but no call yet. :( please call please call please call... I can't take it anymore! to resign now or not? This is a crappy work life. No balance at all. I get to slog such long hours and days for F to work less than 44 hours. In the end, who benefits? Not me...

Where are you!!!

Got called in for a meeting early yesterday morning because of the incident on Monday. At 0830hrs sharp, i had a very irate voice saying "'where are you all hah? I tell you 8.30 meet me right? Now what time or-ready?'' Poor me had to say sorry so many times in reply to that. What a way to start a day!

While entering the execution chamber, i chose a seat located at his 1 o'clock. Although at a meeting the seats from 9 to 3 are those most easily seen by the chairperson, yesterday's seat was ''shielded'' by C so i pushed him to beside me and took cover. Lucky i did!

Towards the end of the meeting, he burst out ''Yesterday where were you all? Call everyone not in! In future you all cannot leave before i leave!'' All through the meeting i was looking down and quietly simmering, so when Soh burst that out, i glanced up and saw another foreman's eyes at me and looking very unhappy.

What right does he have to tell me that i can only leave after him? He works from 830 to 545 Mondays to Fridays, while i come in at 730 everyday. I already clock 60-hour weeks without any sight of OT or time off, and i'm still supposed to stay back late? Then if he were to tua me by staying till 8pm, i got to stay till after that?

In the end i left yesterday at 630pm. S thought he lifted the coffin lid by saying he'll transfer me, but after the conversation in HQ with F, CJ & C, Soh's comments only drove in yet another nail. And anyway, even after so much talk there is still no movement in sight.

Should i throw in now and to heck with having found another job or not? please call please call please call...

Tarred with the same brush

Received a call just now. I sayed till 6plus every day and only today i left at 5.10pm. And of all days, the user had to call me today to complain! Buy 4d also not so chuun lor... :(

Anyway, it seems that the group were accused of placing their feet on the table. In other words, kiao ka. And ALL of them did that! So the officer wants ALL of them to go! I just received confirmation that its only one of them who did it, so we'll try tomorrow to see if we can appease them by telling them we've identified the culprit and we'll send him back, though i think its more likely C will transfer him out.

But the officer is really unreasonable. And why must they exagerate until its the entire group that kiao ka onto the table? Apparently his boss saw it so the officer threw a fit. So would it be the boss that exagerated or him? Anyway, all creaners are row crass to him, so i suppow its normer that the creaner will kiao ka at the fah food lor.

One thing about the group which leaves me rather speechless in a way -- sometimes they can be very united, but threaten them and they seem to me to be the sort to sell their parents! I told one of them of the threat to be sent back if they cannot tell us the "offender'', so they came back almost immediately with the chap's name. What did he do? Leaned back at the fast food stool and placed one foot on the stool. He shouldn't have done that, but he didn't kiao ka onto the table. And its only one, not all.

Its times like this that makes me wonder why i left the garmen to suffer in the private sector...

Telephone porridge

Received my dreaded telephone bill yesterday. It exceeded even dear's 6-month average! And i'm only the bloody company rep on site! On ONE site! Dear even with his various camps came nowhere near me, and its not even the full month.

Well, i hit 1122 minutes of incoming and 814 minutes outgoing. So my iTwo Plus bill shot up by 127%. wow... Its exceeded my handphone allowance! Dear told me to change my phone plan, but if i don't stay on in the coy? What am i to do with 700 minutes of outgoing calls? sigh...

Maybe i should get the prepaid card to make calls out. Afterall, its a $128 call value and my current plan is free incoming. But its super leh chay to carry two phones.

I'm still in shock over the phone calls made and received...

Eco-friendly seafood recipes

Sometimes i find interesting articles on Woman's Day, but i think its not really that possible to find the stuff here? Or probably -- and a very high probability! -- i'm just too lazy to go hunting for the ingredients...

Food product duds

Didn't realize how wild the imagination of the food companies could be, but blue ketchup? Here i am, thinking the blue is one of the most off-palate food colour... Interesting read on the food product duds on Woman's Day. wow...

*ring ring*

The phone went ringing today but not from the party i want. Instead, they offered me a post as a financial planner but i told them i can't even plan my own finances, let alone others! So i declined politely and thanked them for considering me.

If i cannot even plan my own, i dont think its responsible of me to advise others how to plan theirs. Bear in mind its their retirement nest egg that i'm going to ''play'' with! So no thank you, i am not qualified to bear this responsibility.

But at least there was a *ring ring* lor. Now only hoping the parties i want will ring me up...

Healthy feline facts

Read this interesting article on feline facts at Woman's Day. The part about training was amusing -- the cat is more likely to train you than you are in training her. So we simply learn to live with naughty cats. :)

Rest In Peace, 老Hero

When i was working at my first organization, we had the term contractor system, so there was lots of contact with contractors. Naturally, it will include, on occasion, the bosses of the companies. The boss of one of the companies was nicknamed 老Hero. I think it was also the time when the Channel 8 comedy serial with the husband called ''老Hero'' was also aired. I remember being told who 老Hero was and that he supposedly is quite stingy. So since my colleagues referred to him as such behind his back, i figured he must be some character!

I never had any dealings with him face to face, but more with his sub-cons and his accounts dept when chasing for invoices. However, he will appear more often towards the end of the FY to chase for the works orders or finalized cost to prepare the invoices and to chase for payment. I doubt he ever knew my name -- i'm probably some small fry to him -- but he'll nod and smile at me when he passes me by.

But as i left that office for other offices within the same organization, i heard more and more about him. I guess what led to the others giving him that nickname is that he dares to raise his voice to the senior managers of my dept. And sometimes, i feel these senior managers really need to have one ''brave'' soul who will point out to them things that we, their petrified minions, would never do so -- do that at the risk of your ranking and bonus! Sometimes i find him amusingly stingy, sometimes his antics really leave much to be desired, but he is one person who dares to talk back to MKS. Anyone who talks back to MKS, is really a 老Hero!

老Hero, hope you didn't suffer too much during your attack. May you rest in peace.

Relief?

Read an article in the paper that 15,000 NUS alumni details were accidentally circulated and that the staff member has been counselled and disciplined. Well, the damage is already done and no amount of discipling will retrieve those emails that cannot be retrieved. Anyway, no one in their right mind would do anything like that, knowing it will get them into trouble if they were to admit it! So i suppose it is really an accident.

Details that apparently were leaked were names, contacts, subject majors etc. As the article wrote, identity theft will be an issue, as well as getting calls from banks and salesmen. But then, some ''good'' news for the rest of us not so academically inclined NUS alumni -- if you graduated between 1993 to date with 2nd lower and below, you won't be affected. So I won't be in the group, but i wonder if big seed will be affected? Can't remember if she graduated in 1992 or 1993.

So sometimes it pays to be smart, but not so smart! :P

Bring it back?

Was rushing the manpower returns for submission on Tues. Managed to get most of the basic things done then C got a slight EOT for me. So at the end, i was already fretting and raring to leave cos i promised dear that i'll cook dinner. C & his wife were there and C then said to get a maid so i would not need to go back to prepare dinner. Don't know if his wife was teasing him, but she said they have a maid but he still expects her to cook! So C went ''heehee'' and then asked me if i'm not bringing the notebook back.

I glared at him and said that dear is already not very happy with my working hours, and he still wants me to bring it back? I asked if he was kidding me and if he wants me to get into trouble with dear over my working hours. Wonder if it went into him?

Anyway, S & F popped by today, so i told them the site probelms and of course S told me that the plan for me is ...blahblahblah... etc etc. I was thinking to myself that ya, right, they have such wonderful plans for me yet when i asked them for an appointment letter at the end of last year, it took them so long to get it done, only passing it to me after i started work. And i'm to serve out my probation also since there's nothing wrong with serving it ma. I let them rattle on then came up with the ultimate. Dear is not happy with my working hours. S then said in this case its difficult to say anymore.

So what does that mean? I don't know. But i'm not going to bring back the notebook if i can help it. Any idea what the Compaq CQ40 weighs? Feels like a ton to me...

Lunchtime

Can't you just call the supplier during lunchtime? Get the staff to come down during lunchtime to give you the info la!

The 2 above remarks were by 2 fantastic people last week at work. wow...

First of all, i have no lunchtime to think of. As it is right now, i'll be glad for 5 mins to just sit and not have to think about anything! What Ah Choo & i now do is to have fried beehoon with other stuff for breakfast and that's our 2 meals for the day. So, call during lunchtime? No time for lunch, let alone a call.

Anyway, if its my lunchtime, wouldn't it be the other party's lunchtime too? So your point is?

As for getting staff to give up part of their mealbreak time, that's impossible. I can't disturb them during their working hours to do their admin stuff unless i get them a replacement, so its not possible. Getting them to cut short their lunch? duh...

But in the event that there are a few souls willing to do so, then what happens to MY lunchtime? I got to give it up too! Else by the time i'm settled with them, lunchtime is already over. And when the user calls? Am i to tell them i'm having my lunch? They would think i'm having a super extended lunch! So there goes my lunchtime.

As it is, i don't really have a breakfast time. All i do is to shovel the food into my mouth, chew and swallow as fast as i can then it off to start the (sickening work)day. Am i eating? No... Its feeding time as far as i'm concerned.

So what is it about this fantastic lunchtime that makes so many people think its ok to use? I got to bloody come in at 7am to have my breakfast cum lunch -- meaning i leave home at 6am meaning i wake up at 5! -- then work through the whole bloody day, give up my lunch time and then leave for home at 6pm, only to continue the paperwork at home! What lunch time? The cleaners get their lunch time and 2 bloody tea-break times! All in all, i see them having a 2 hour break!

Vincent, if you happen to read this, ask yourself if this kind of worklife is what you want your wife to have. If not, then why do you expect me to accept this?

All adds up

I'm getting really discouraged and frustrated, and its all adding up. Just read S8's post on her office's dress code, and i commented that i don't have any image now. Previously i would still use lipstick and mascara, and wear blouses or pants, but now i'm in jeans and t-shirts daily, with not even a glimpse of lipstick. Why bother? I walk around the whole day with a waterfall on my face and by 10am i'm already all sticky and frustrated. It doesn't help that my skin condition is now pimply and freckly! Ah Choo reminded me to use a sunblock, but what's the point when i'll just "wash" it off?

Work is frankly, like shit. How i wish i can just press the button and flush it all away! Somehow the 2 men that C interviewed can't make it. One Indian and one Chinese. Both don't listen to me. The I disappeared for 3 days -- mil or something like that apparently died -- then turned up for less than 4 hours today and then told C he is taking half day. For what? Just so he can get the PH pay today? The C yaya-papaya and didn't want to ask me questions about the deployment Ah Choo & i did for his bloody building. Then when i told him to do the night deployment, he just "you here, you there" to the staff. When i reminded him on their working hours, he said i didn't tell him. I shot back, telling him that he has been walking around the whole day talking to them, and why didn't he ask them? Even if he didn't ask them, knowing there are M'sians & PRCs, shouldn't he ask me? I told him too that if he doesn't ask, i will take it that he knows. Afterall, how would i know what he doesn't know? Ah Choo also had it from him. Tell him one thing, "wa zhai, wa zhai". Kanasai!!! (oops, this is supposed to be a polite blog...)

My temper is getting worse and worse. C only adds fuel to an already smoldering pile! "be patient, let us settle then we get rid of the supervisors not performing!" "be patient, set up is like this one, after 1 month you can stay in your office whole day and relax!" But what does he do? "C, how can like that, whine-whine-whine..." *ring-ring* "E! this guy will go back, i agree with xxx..." "C, you never give me... whine-whine-whine..." *ring-ring* "E! You still haven't give her the staff? hurry up!"

I've had it! He changes the decisions Ah Choo or i make once the foremen whines to him without listening to us, so what does that make her and me? Why hire me as the manager and she as the supervisor then? The staff will only know to go to him if they can't get what they want from us! And the best part? He actually told Ah Choo to do the time card for a cleaner, just because "我没有时间, 我的时间是珍贵的!" And who said that? A cleaner. So it means both of us are free enough and our time isn't important? So the cleaner cannot come in to punch card, but Ah Choo has to come in early to do so for her? And he expects a supervisor to punch card for someone else? Sometimes i think he has no 原则. How can i tell the staff not to punch cards for others when the mgr has asked a supervisor to do so for another? Does this mean that this cleaner is above all others?

Dear has gone off for a riding trip. I didn't join him cos i wanted to complete the schedule before dinner, so we can stay out later tonight. I feel bad about it. He told me about going for a ride and asked me if i want to come along, but how can i when i've stuff to do? The schedule was given to C for his comment in early mar and till now he has not looked at it. The time has passed and i've to adjust it. C has time to do it for South and he gets his wife to help. Me? I've to do it alone. no help!

Yesterday morning, CCS called me and the stoopid accounts girl as good as accused me of encashing a $5k cheque and keeping the money. I told her that i wouldn't be so stupid as to take a measly $5k! If i want to take loads of money and run off, i would take at least $5mil or $50mil! A miserable $5000? Anyway, i told them i had not received the cheque since i submitted the request and i didn't chase for it because i knew the company has no money. I'm glad i told Sam that i haven't received the amount for it before i left, so right after that call i called him to complain. If they want, go report police la! Then i'll hantam them for slandering me!

I told dear that although he works late, at least once he comes back, he doesn't bring his paperwork with him. His time at home is all for home, unlike me. I told him too that i feel like telling Sam that i quit, but felt that was bad cos its night already. So how? sms him now that's its day? But its PH and he needs the rest too. So tomorrow ba... Even though i haven't found a job, i can't take it there anymore. I'll probably tell him i'm giving him my 2 weeks notice but i'll serve until i've trained the new person what to do.

Submitted another application today. Wanted to submit one more but its at Jln Batera. That's near the training ground, right at Lim Chu Kang... Maybe that's why the post is available! haha! Please please call me...

Exhaustion

The contract started on 1 Apr and i'm totally exhausted. I've been going in early at 7 and leaving only about 6.30. Yes, C gives me a lift out to Jurong East, but i'd rather not if i can. Its not so much on the taking lifts or not, but the long hours, physical work and paperwork when i'm at home. The user expects me to reply their emails, but i have no time to read the emails, let alone open the notebook. In fact, i've no office as yet! The room that C sort of targetted for my office is still used as a temporary store for cleaning chemicals. I just saw the mobile broadband gadget in his car but kept quiet about it. I doubt i can cope once he gives me the bloody thing!

Just how bad is it? I come back with a wet -- not damp -- terry towel handkerchief every day and today was especially bad. In the crowded train, i had a clear space around me! Meal times are as good as forfeited. I only get to eat at weird hours or not at all. Didn't get to eat first half of the week and only started eating at 10 today. Why not? The phone rings almost non-stop. During lunch time, i've to get the LTs cleaned, meaning i got to show the new staff what to do. After lunchtime, the user calls me to complain etc. I walk until my legs are sore every day. Today? I had to push a janitor's trolley, carry stock etc.

What pisses me off is oen of the user's mentality towards the cleaners. Many times, when he calls us in for a meeting, he keeps saying "you/the creaner are all row crass one". Listening to the way he speaks, i doubt he is very highly educated as well -- the typical "fah-food" type of speaking people, who or-way say dis and dat. So since my cleaners are low class, i'm probably equally low class as them. After all, it takes one to lead the other isn't it?

What kind of life is this?

Dear has this kind of life, i think. But its definitely not for me. I'm exhausted, both mentally and physically.

Only hope i get a call soon... :(

Rumours abound

Heard the institution was mentioned in the Mandarin night papers that some are circulating in the internet about the place being 'dirty'. The supervisors here tell me it is true and that they sometimes have experienced instances when they do not feel good. Its quite scary to me, me being a scaredy cat and all, and i think i'll only want to go back as soon as i can. The new little hole where my office is likely to be is at the basement 5 and is in an isolated corner. Not good...

sigh.
